Critical illness cover.
Designed to pay a lump sum or regular income on diagnosis of a specified critical illness. Definitions vary massively between insurers — we compare the small print, not just the premium.
The small print is where the money is.
Critical illness policies pay a tax-free lump sum if you are diagnosed with one of the illnesses listed in the policy. The difference between insurers is not really the price — it is what they cover. One insurer might cover 42 conditions, another 118. Definitions of "cancer" and "heart attack" differ. We spend the time to compare the small print because that is where the money is when you claim.
- Comprehensive comparison — We compare the illnesses covered, not just the price. Some policies cover 40 conditions, others 100+.
- Full-payment vs partial-payment — Some conditions pay out at 100%, others at 25% or 50%. We check both.
- Children’s cover built in — Most modern policies include children’s critical illness cover automatically, up to a set amount.
- Combined with life cover — We often bundle critical illness with life insurance for a lower combined premium.
- Guaranteed vs reviewable premiums — A guaranteed premium never goes up. A reviewable one might. We explain the trade-off.

The same process for every critical illness cover enquiry, whether it is your first mortgage or your fifth.
The household conversation
We start with who depends on your income and what your household commitments look like, before we look at any policy.
Compare the small print
We compare exclusions, definitions, and premiums across the market. Cheaper is not always better on protection.
Written recommendation
You get a plain-English report explaining what we recommend, what it covers, what it does not, and what it will cost.
What you will pay.
We do not charge you a fee for protection advice. We are paid a commission by the product provider, which is included in the premium and disclosed to you in writing before you commit to anything.
Our recommendation is based on what is right for your household, not on which provider pays the most commission.
Questions we get about critical illness cover.
01Should I get critical illness cover or income protection?+
They cover different things. Critical illness pays a lump sum on diagnosis; income protection pays a monthly income if you can’t work due to any illness. Ideally you have both, but if you have to choose, income protection is usually the more useful product statistically.
02How many conditions should the policy cover?+
The best policies cover 100+ conditions. The cheapest cover around 40. We compare the actual conditions rather than just counting them, because some are much more likely to affect you than others.
03What is "additional payment" or "partial payment"?+
Some conditions (like less severe forms of cancer or early-stage heart attacks) pay out a percentage of the sum insured (often 25%) rather than the full amount, and the policy continues afterwards. Better policies have more of these.
04Is my children’s cover automatic?+
Yes, on most modern policies children’s critical illness cover is built in as standard, up to a set amount (typically 50% of the parent’s cover, capped at £25,000). We check this on every quote.
